This is the story of how I learned to be smarter on European trains.
I fell asleep on the train from Budapest to Vienna. Classic mistake. When I woke up, my backpack was gone. In it: my passport, my laptop, my wallet, everything.
I was left with just the clothes I was wearing and my phone (which was in my pocket, thank god).
---
What I should've done:
The cardinal rule: your valuable stuff stays on your body or in a bag you can feel. Not in the overhead bin. Not under your seat. On your body or in your lap.
I got lucky. I had an extra card in my pocket. I called my bank, cancelled everything, got help from the Chinese embassy in Vienna (they were actually really helpful).
But it was a nightmare that could've been prevented.

The theft-prone routes
Long overnight trains are the most common place for theft, especially:
These aren't guarantees, but be extra vigilant on these.
---
The actual safety stuff
Get a lock for your bag. A simple cable lock through the zippers can deter opportunists.
Use the overhead bin? Put a jacket on top of it so you'd notice if someone moved it.
Take turns sleeping if you're traveling with someone. Don't all sleep at once.
Keep your phone and wallet in front pockets, not back.
---
The ticket thing
Book directly through official channels when possible:
Avoid third-party resellers. You might pay more, and sometimes tickets are invalid.
---
If your stuff does get stolen
