I didn't file taxes for two years. Here's what happened.

I didn't know I had to. No one told me. I was a student with a small part-time job. I thought taxes were for "real adults."

Then my university sent me a letter. I owed penalties for not filing.

Do international students file taxes?

Short answer: usually yes, even if you don't owe anything.

In most countries, if you earn income, you need to file. Some countries (like the US for F-1 students) have tax treaties that may exempt the first few years of study-related income. But you still might need to file to claim that exemption.

The deadlines are real. Miss them and you face penalties. I learned this the expensive way.

The basics by country

US:

  • F-1 students: first 5 years are usually tax-exempt on income earned while in student status
  • You'll get a W-2 from your employer if you worked on-campus
  • Use Form 8843 if you're exempt
  • File through IRS or use a tax filing service
  • Deadline: April 15 (like everyone else)

    UK:

  • Student Route visa holders: no tax if you're under the personal allowance threshold
  • If you earn over the threshold, you file with HMRC
  • It's usually handled through PAYE (Pay As You Earn) automatically
  • But if you have multiple jobs or significant income, you might need to file

    Germany:

  • Everyone who earns must file annually
  • There's a basic allowance (Grundfreibetrag) — below this, you owe nothing
  • Filing is through Finanzamt, can be done online
  • If you had a part-time job, tax was automatically deducted — you might be owed a refund

    The keeping records thing

Keep every document related to your income and taxes:

  • Pay stubs
  • Tax forms from your employer
  • Any scholarship/grant documents
  • Your visa and entry/exit records

I learned this too late. I spent hours reconstructing records from my employer and bank.

    Getting help

Your university's international student office often has tax guidance or can point you to free resources.

There are also free tax filing services for students in many countries. Don't pay someone to file a simple student tax return if you don't need to.

Some countries have special agreements with Chinese embassies or cultural centers for help. It's worth asking.
