How I got sucked into a "money-flipping" scam on Instagram

I know, I know — I was naive. But hear me out so you don't make the same mistake.

It started with a sponsored post. "Free Money Friday! DM us to learn how to make $500 this week!" I know, huge red flag. But I was broke and curious.

They DM'd me first. Said they worked with major brands, needed "reviewers." All I had to do was:
1. Send them $100 via CashApp
2. They'd send me $150 back
3. Keep $50 as my "commission"

First time? They actually sent $150. I thought I hit the jackpot.

Second time, I sent $500. They said I needed to "unlock" a higher tier by sending $200 more.

I did.

Then they ghosted. Account deleted. I was out $700 and felt like the biggest idiot on the planet.

What I should've done:

Real jobs don't ask you to pay first. Period. If someone says "you have to send money to receive money" — you're looking at a scam.

Red flags that were obvious in hindsight:

  • "Work from your phone!" "No experience needed!"
  • They DM'd me first
  • Everything happened through CashApp/Zelle, no paperwork
  • The initial "proof" they sent was probably someone else's money

If it sounds too good to be true:

  • Legitimate part-time work: $10-20/hour
  • "Easy $500/day" doesn't exist
  • No real company pays people to "flip money"

    Where to actually find work:

  • Your school's Career Center
  • Indeed.com
  • LinkedIn
  • On-campus jobs (library, dining hall, etc.)
