Okay, I'm not proud of this. But in my first year at Manchester, I almost lost 280 quid to a "landlord" on Rightmove.
Here's what happened —
I found this flat listed at 680/month. That was like 200 less than everything else I'd seen. Red flag, right? But I was desperate and thought maybe the guy was just desperate to rent.
He said he was in Dubai. Couldn't do video calls. But he could ship me the keys. All I had to do was send the deposit to his HSBC account to "prove I was serious."
I was literally about to transfer the money when my flatmate stopped me. "Bro, this is the classic Deposit Scam." We looked up the listing — turns out the photos were stolen from a real estate site. That flat didn't exist.
---
So here's what I learned the hard way:
Never, ever pay any deposit before you've seen the place in person. A real landlord or agent will never ask you to wire money to someone's personal account. And if someone says they're "overseas" or "too busy to meet" — that's your cue to hang up and walk away.
