Fake Degree Diploma Mill Scam

How I almost got a "degree" from a school that didn't exist

This is embarrassing but I think it's important to share.

I wasn't getting into any real schools. My grades were okay but not great, and the application cycle was brutal. Then I found this program — they accepted everyone. No entrance exams. No GPA requirements. Just pay tuition and you're in.

The website looked real. Really real. They had:

A campus address (later I found out it was a rented office space)

Student testimonials (probably fake)

"Accreditation" badges (I didn't know how to verify them)

A name that sounded like a real university (turns out it was one letter off from a real school)

I was this close to enrolling. I had the application half-filled out.

My dad asked me to check the government's education verification website. I didn't even know that existed.

I looked up the school. It wasn't on the list. I looked closer at the testimonials — reverse image search showed those photos belonged to other people on different websites.

I stopped the application. But I know people who didn't.

How to actually verify a school

In China: 教育部涉外监管信息网 (jsj.moe.edu.cn). They have a list of verified foreign institutions.

For the US: Check the Department of Education database. Your school's regional accreditation (there are six in the US — make sure yours is one of them).

For the UK: Check if it's on the list of registered sponsors (UKVI website).

Red flags that should make you run

"No requirements! Everyone is accepted!"

"Study at your own pace, no exams!"

"Get your degree in 6 months!"

"We have articulation agreements with real universities" (they don't)

The name is one letter off from a famous school

What happens if you end up at a fake school

Your "degree" is worthless

Your student visa becomes invalid

You can't work with that degree anywhere

You may be investigated for visa fraud if they think you knew

You've wasted years and a lot of money

There's no shortcut to a real education. I know it's hard to hear when you're struggling to get in somewhere. But a fake degree solves nothing.
