"Congratulations! You've been selected!" — yeah, right

I got this email during my scholarship search. I was so excited I almost clicked the link before reading it carefully.

"Congratulations! You have been selected for the [made-up name] International Student Scholarship. To claim your award of $5,000, please submit a processing fee of $150."

Processing fee. For a scholarship. That "selected" me without me applying.

Something felt off. So I looked closer:

The sender email was a Gmail address, not a school or official org

The "scholarship" had no website I could find

The deadline was "within 48 hours" — pressure tactic

The "processing fee" would go to some weird payment app

I deleted it. But I was so close.

This is the simplest rule: if someone asks you to pay to receive a scholarship, it's a scam. Real scholarships pay you. They don't charge you.

Hover over it to see where it actually goes

Check the sender's email address carefully

Go directly to the official website by typing it yourself, don't use email links
